As this year ends, and it has been a rather complicated one, with lots of changes but worthy it as I reached a new maturity as a professional illustrator and love more than ever being one, I decided to go back to the roots and post a drawing I did when I was 3 years-old (by the laces and frills on the girl’s dress I believe was meant to be already a fashion illustrator ;))

This is a piece of my story board for the video sample I directed for DJ Shadow’s Screen Test, in collaboration with my friend João who did all the animation because I am still not geek enough :).

There’s something wonderful about illustrating music, I guess it is all about the movement and rhythm coordination. I love it.

I would like to post a nice sequence on this but I caught this terrible flu so I guess I’ll be back only in a few days...

I am quite happy with this project, the editors gave me 100% freedom to do what I wanted, including choosing size, format and number of pages and work with my old friend and designer Daniel.

It has been the year of magic presents...I got really amazing ones.
Besides two of his wonderful books yesterday, I got from my friend Alain,
some weeks ago, the original from one of his illos I had been completely in love with for
last couple of months.

It has been done for Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, a project for cd cover’s some of us did for a newspaper.

Alain is also one of my favourite illustrators, he’s amazingly versatile and a great writer as well.

This was my project, here not finished, it will come out with the 1^st part of Cosi Fan Tute.

But I think it would be better for a Requiem :), I don’t appreciate Mozart and think this one came out really quite weird, hehehe....

Rather do a cd cover for Tchaikovsky’s Op.35 ,concerto in D Major for Violin.

That would be a lovely illustration...

My new book was published last week and it’s now available at Portuguese bookshops.

Unfortunately I don’t agree with the design which looks like this:

A good example of how to make a picture book look really ugly.
That’s my own opinion of course…

I wonder if they could have balanced the text, at least to look a bit more like this…

Or at least I would have liked to have the cover with the title as I suggested.

That’s what I hate in pre-formatted collections…

I finished these just now.

It is a project for finger-puppets. Mother and Son.

Spanish publishing house Imaginarium decided to make a new edition of a book I’ve illustrated “Mamá de qué color son los besos?”, in a Spanish-English version.

They will be mini-books with finger-puppets, so as the story can be told and played.

I find the idea really sweet....
Was a bit bounded because I could only use 3 colours for the felt and 3 colours for the sewed details and stitches.
But had lots of fun, definitely an interesting experience and I am curious to see how they will be when ready:).

This is an old one, from 2002.

It was commissioned for a magazine at mother’s day.

I don’t have the original anymore, but I saved the image (the left foot is a bit cut, though).

As time goes by, and as I look back at my work, there are illustrations I don’t like anymore but there is other’s I keep identifying with my inner world.
